Designed for riders of all ages and levels, the school provides a wide range of services — from private and group lessons to pony rides, holiday camps, themed parties, and personalized training for those who wish to advance in their practice or even own their own horse. All within a space that values connection with animals, continuous learning, and a strong sense of community.

Did You Know? Portugal’s Deep Equestrian Tradition

Portugal stands among Europe’s leading nations for classical horsemanship, a tradition that dates back to the monarchy and continues today through prestigious equestrian institutions. The most famous is the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art, based in Lisbon — one of Europe’s “Big Four” classical schools, alongside the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, the Cadre Noir of Saumur (France), and the Royal Andalusian School in Jerez.

At the heart of this tradition is the Lusitano horse (Puro Sangue Lusitano), one of the oldest horse breeds in the world, tracing its origins back over 5,000 years. A descendant of the Iberian horse, influenced by Berber and Arabian bloodlines, the Lusitano is known for its natural ability in classical dressage. Historically bred for nobility, today it represents Portuguese equestrian heritage and is carefully bred at renowned stud farms such as Coudelaria de Alter Real, founded in 1748 by King João V.

Across Portugal, the landscape is an open invitation for horseback riding — from the Atlantic coast, with its wild dunes and vast beaches, to the serene countryside dotted with vineyards, hills, and medieval villages, offering diverse and breathtaking settings for every ride.

The Best Equestrian Centers Around Lisbon and Cascais

Between the sophistication of Cascais, the heritage of Sintra, and the energy of Lisbon, this region is home to some of Portugal’s finest equestrian centers. This corridor combines exceptional infrastructure with a lifestyle deeply connected to nature and tradition. Living here means having access to modern arenas, seaside trails, and schools that range from recreational riding to international competition training.

Golf is an essential part of the exclusive lifestyle enjoyed by residents of Quinta da Beloura. The community features an 18-hole championship course spread across 60 hectares of mostly flat terrain, set at the foothills of the Sintra Mountains. Players enjoy beautiful views and wide fairways that weave through a luxury residential resort dotted with lakes and over 40,000 trees — including pines, oaks, and eucalyptus — creating a lush green landscape framed by the romantic Sintra hills.

The Beloura Golf Course was designed by the renowned American golf course architect William “Rocky” Roquemore, internationally recognized for his work on some of the most prestigious golf courses in Europe and the United States. Opened in 1991, it is the most recent golf course in the Estoril–Cascais region. The course welcomes players of all levels and is also very popular among beginners from the Lisbon area thanks to the lessons and training programs offered at the club.

The playing experience at Beloura Golf

Playing at Beloura Golf is a balanced blend of skill and enjoyment. The course offers a smooth and inviting layout, with wide fairways and well-defined rough areas that encourage players to test different strategies and approaches.

Featured holes

The course includes several holes that have become favorites among golfers in the region:

  • 7th hole – A technical par 4 requiring precision from the tee. Players must clear the first lake encroaching onto the fairway, then position the ball before the small stream crossing about 100 meters from the green. The final approach demands finesse and calculation, as the green is protected by side bunkers and subtly slopes from back to front.
  • 17th hole – A par 4 known for its elegance and difficulty. The opening shot must avoid the lake on the left and the out-of-bounds area on the right, combining both power and accuracy. It’s one of the most scenic holes on the course, with open views of the Sintra hills and a fairway winding between tall trees and reflective water hazards.
  • 18th hole – The signature hole of Beloura Golf. This 384-meter par 4 closes the round with one of the most memorable approaches in the region. The green is tucked behind the largest lake on the course, demanding a precise and confident final shot. A visually stunning and technically challenging finish, worthy of top international courses.

Note: The descriptions of the most famous holes are based on insights shared by golfers and specialized publications about Beloura Golf.

Services and experiences at Beloura Golf

The Beloura Golf Club, part of the Pestana Sintra Golf Hotel, offers a full structure for players of all levels. In addition to its 18-hole course, the club features a pro shop, a restaurant overlooking the fairway, a golf clinic, and a complete practice area with driving range, putting green, and chipping area.

I have a deep affection for Sintra. I had visited the city several times as a tourist before moving to Portugal, and now that I live nearby, I’ve discovered even more reasons to love this incredible destination and the entire Serra de Sintra area. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, Sintra is rich in architecture and history. What makes the city even more special is the unique microclimate created by the Serra de Sintra, fostering a distinct and vibrant flora and fauna. It’s no wonder that royalty and nobility chose this region to build their palaces and historic castles. It’s a mix of a special climate, natural beauty, stunning beaches, traditional Sintra architecture, and a deep sense of history—all with a touch of mysticism.

When I decided to move to Portugal with my family, we hadn’t yet discovered the Beloura area (Quinta da Beloura), which is part of the Sintra municipality. We loved the region so much that we chose it as our home. Quinta da Beloura is a gated community located between Cascais and Sintra (just a 10-minute drive to either), with several international schools nearby, and it sits right at the foot of the Serra de Sintra. Living here, we’ve come to appreciate this unique and pleasant climate, which, thanks to the humidity, reminds us a bit of Brazil’s tropical weather.

Sintra: A Blend of History, Nature, and Culture in Portugal

History and Culture

Sintra’s history dates back to ancient times, with evidence of Phoenician, Roman, and Moorish occupations. During the Middle Ages, the city grew in importance as a cultural and political center, particularly after the Christian Reconquest. By the 19th century, Sintra had become a popular destination for the European elite, drawn by its romantic atmosphere and mild climate. Many of the city’s impressive palaces and mansions were built during this period, reflecting the diverse architectural styles that define Sintra today.

What to Do in Sintra

Nestled in the lush hills of the Lisbon region, Sintra is a charming city that offers a rich tapestry of experiences for visitors. With its unique blend of opulent palaces, stunning natural landscapes, and unrivaled historical charm, Sintra is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to dive into the culture and beauty of Portugal. Here are some of the best things to do in Sintra:

  1. Visit the National Palace of Sintra
The National Palace of Sintra, with its iconic conical chimneys and distinctive architecture, is one of the city’s top attractions. Built in the 14th century, the palace served as a royal residence and is known for its richly decorated interiors and traditional Portuguese tiles. Visitors can explore its majestic rooms, such as the Swan Hall and the Coat of Arms Hall, and admire the stunning collection of azulejos (tiles) adorning the walls.
  1. Be Amazed by Pena Palace
Dominating the Sintra landscape, Pena Palace is a true architectural marvel. Built in the 19th century by King Ferdinand II, the palace is an exuberant example of romantic architecture, blending Gothic, Manueline, Renaissance, and Moorish styles. Its colorful buildings and towers offer breathtaking panoramic views of the city and surrounding area. The gardens and exterior of the palace are just as captivating as the interior.
  1. Explore Quinta da Regaleira
Quinta da Regaleira is one of the most mysterious and fascinating places in Sintra, and it should definitely be on your list. This palace and its gardens were built in the early 20th century and are known for their esoteric and symbolic design. Visitors can explore the Initiation Well, a spiraling underground tower, and the labyrinth of caves and secret passages throughout the complex. The lush gardens, with their fountains, lakes, and sculptures, add a magical dimension to the experience.
  1. Discover the Moorish Castle
For a dose of medieval history, the Moorish Castle is a must-see attraction. Located atop a hill, this fortified castle dates back to the Moorish period and offers spectacular views of the surrounding area. The castle’s ruins, with their walls and towers, are a great place for a walk and a chance to learn about the region’s military history.
  1. Enjoy Monserrate Gardens
The Monserrate Gardens are a true oasis of tranquility and beauty. This 19th-century palace and its botanical gardens are known for their exotic architecture and impressive plant collections. Visitors can stroll through flower-lined paths, explore greenhouses with tropical plants, and admire the fusion of Eastern and Western architectural styles.
  1. Stroll through Sintra’s Historic Center
Sintra’s historic center is a charming place to wander and explore. With its narrow, winding streets, the center is filled with craft shops, cafés, and restaurants serving traditional Portuguese dishes. Don’t miss the chance to try the famous queijadas and travesseiros, the region’s sweet delicacies.
  1. Hike in the Serra de Sintra
For nature lovers, the Serra de Sintra offers hiking trails that allow you to explore the natural beauty of the region. There are various trails, from easy walks to more challenging routes, leading to viewpoints with stunning vistas and historical sites such as the Capuchos Convent and Monge Cave.
  1. Visit the Seteais Palace
Now a luxury hotel, Seteais Palace is a remarkable example of neoclassical architecture, offering an elegant and sophisticated setting. Even if you’re not staying there, you can enjoy a visit to its gardens or have lunch or dinner at the restaurant, which offers panoramic views of the city and neighboring palaces.
  1. Explore Sintra’s Beautiful Beaches
Did you know the Sintra region is home to some of Portugal’s most beautiful beaches?

Although Sintra is best known for its palaces and mountainous landscapes, nearby beaches like Praia das Maçãs and Praia Grande provide a great opportunity to relax by the sea. These beaches are easily accessible and perfect for a peaceful stroll or a refreshing swim.
