I have a deep affection for Sintra. I had visited the city several times as a tourist before moving to Portugal, and now that I live nearby, I’ve discovered even more reasons to love this incredible destination and the entire Serra de Sintra area. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, Sintra is rich in architecture and history. What makes the city even more special is the unique microclimate created by the Serra de Sintra, fostering a distinct and vibrant flora and fauna. It’s no wonder that royalty and nobility chose this region to build their palaces and historic castles. It’s a mix of a special climate, natural beauty, stunning beaches, traditional Sintra architecture, and a deep sense of history—all with a touch of mysticism.

When I decided to move to Portugal with my family, we hadn’t yet discovered the Beloura area (Quinta da Beloura), which is part of the Sintra municipality. We loved the region so much that we chose it as our home. Quinta da Beloura is a gated community located between Cascais and Sintra (just a 10-minute drive to either), with several international schools nearby, and it sits right at the foot of the Serra de Sintra. Living here, we’ve come to appreciate this unique and pleasant climate, which, thanks to the humidity, reminds us a bit of Brazil’s tropical weather.

Sintra: A Blend of History, Nature, and Culture in Portugal

History and Culture

Sintra’s history dates back to ancient times, with evidence of Phoenician, Roman, and Moorish occupations. During the Middle Ages, the city grew in importance as a cultural and political center, particularly after the Christian Reconquest. By the 19th century, Sintra had become a popular destination for the European elite, drawn by its romantic atmosphere and mild climate. Many of the city’s impressive palaces and mansions were built during this period, reflecting the diverse architectural styles that define Sintra today.

What to Do in Sintra

Nestled in the lush hills of the Lisbon region, Sintra is a charming city that offers a rich tapestry of experiences for visitors. With its unique blend of opulent palaces, stunning natural landscapes, and unrivaled historical charm, Sintra is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to dive into the culture and beauty of Portugal. Here are some of the best things to do in Sintra:

  1. Visit the National Palace of Sintra
The National Palace of Sintra, with its iconic conical chimneys and distinctive architecture, is one of the city’s top attractions. Built in the 14th century, the palace served as a royal residence and is known for its richly decorated interiors and traditional Portuguese tiles. Visitors can explore its majestic rooms, such as the Swan Hall and the Coat of Arms Hall, and admire the stunning collection of azulejos (tiles) adorning the walls.
  1. Be Amazed by Pena Palace
Dominating the Sintra landscape, Pena Palace is a true architectural marvel. Built in the 19th century by King Ferdinand II, the palace is an exuberant example of romantic architecture, blending Gothic, Manueline, Renaissance, and Moorish styles. Its colorful buildings and towers offer breathtaking panoramic views of the city and surrounding area. The gardens and exterior of the palace are just as captivating as the interior.
  1. Explore Quinta da Regaleira
Quinta da Regaleira is one of the most mysterious and fascinating places in Sintra, and it should definitely be on your list. This palace and its gardens were built in the early 20th century and are known for their esoteric and symbolic design. Visitors can explore the Initiation Well, a spiraling underground tower, and the labyrinth of caves and secret passages throughout the complex. The lush gardens, with their fountains, lakes, and sculptures, add a magical dimension to the experience.
  1. Discover the Moorish Castle
For a dose of medieval history, the Moorish Castle is a must-see attraction. Located atop a hill, this fortified castle dates back to the Moorish period and offers spectacular views of the surrounding area. The castle’s ruins, with their walls and towers, are a great place for a walk and a chance to learn about the region’s military history.
  1. Enjoy Monserrate Gardens
The Monserrate Gardens are a true oasis of tranquility and beauty. This 19th-century palace and its botanical gardens are known for their exotic architecture and impressive plant collections. Visitors can stroll through flower-lined paths, explore greenhouses with tropical plants, and admire the fusion of Eastern and Western architectural styles.
  1. Stroll through Sintra’s Historic Center
Sintra’s historic center is a charming place to wander and explore. With its narrow, winding streets, the center is filled with craft shops, cafés, and restaurants serving traditional Portuguese dishes. Don’t miss the chance to try the famous queijadas and travesseiros, the region’s sweet delicacies.
  1. Hike in the Serra de Sintra
For nature lovers, the Serra de Sintra offers hiking trails that allow you to explore the natural beauty of the region. There are various trails, from easy walks to more challenging routes, leading to viewpoints with stunning vistas and historical sites such as the Capuchos Convent and Monge Cave.
  1. Visit the Seteais Palace
Now a luxury hotel, Seteais Palace is a remarkable example of neoclassical architecture, offering an elegant and sophisticated setting. Even if you’re not staying there, you can enjoy a visit to its gardens or have lunch or dinner at the restaurant, which offers panoramic views of the city and neighboring palaces.
  1. Explore Sintra’s Beautiful Beaches
Did you know the Sintra region is home to some of Portugal’s most beautiful beaches?

Although Sintra is best known for its palaces and mountainous landscapes, nearby beaches like Praia das Maçãs and Praia Grande provide a great opportunity to relax by the sea. These beaches are easily accessible and perfect for a peaceful stroll or a refreshing swim.
